Update on Conversations on Augustine's City of God

If you are new to this group, we engage in conversations on the writings of early church leaders.  You would be a good fit if you enjoy lively conversations around the writings of the church fathers and other spiritual writers.  Please join us!

On August 30th, we will take up Chapter 1 (Ewing) and Chapter 5 (Brian).  Volunteers are responsible to develop an outline of talking points for the chapter.  This outline will be used to facilitate the conversation.  Our meeting place is Rocco's Italian Grill in Bee Cave.  We will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Some come early at 5:45 pm for appetizers.

Here is a summary of the two topics for August 30th:

Book 1:  criticism of pagans blaming the Christians for the sack of Rome; good and bad things happen to the righteous & the wicked alike  pp. 3-40
Book 5:  rejection of the doctrine of fate and an explanation of the doctrine of free will; Rome’s dominion was due to the virtue of the Romans  pp. 142-181

There are two open spots for those who would like to volunteer to facilitate:  Book 9 on September 27th and Book 13 on October 25th.

Other resources:  a brief online biography on Augustine (https://tinyurl.com/y8hhzn3d), Augustine:  A Very Short Introduction by Henry Chadwick, and The First Thousand Years:  A Global History of Christianity by Robert Louis Wilken (an overview of of the history covered)

We received feedback from last year's readings.  It was noted that everybody should attend more regularly and be prompt, if at all possible.

Conversations about the Early Church Leaders

In late August, our group will conduct conversations about Augustine’s City of God.  In February of 2019, our discussions will center around Augustine’s The Trinity and The Spirit and the Letter.  Last year, which was our first year, our conversations were on the writings of Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius, and Gregory of Nazianzus.  We meet once a month starting on Thursday, August 30th at Rocco’s Grill in Bee Cave from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  [Some share a light meal prior to our meeting and come at 5:45 p.m.].  If you want to read Augustine this year with us, please email Ewing Brown of your interest at ewing@texasanglicans.net and he will email you the schedule for the Fall.
