1 Περὶ δὲ τῆς εὐχαριστίας


It seems to me this is a clear instance of the word being a name for the Lord’s Supper.  Is this is so, then the verb probably means “celebrate the eucharist thusly."

Cornutus 27 p. 51, 3, where the pleasant state for the ἄμπ. is τὸ πολυφόρον κ. καθαρόν; Sir 24:17 of wisdom: ἐγὼ ὡς ἄ. ἐβλάστησα χάριν; Did., Gen. 86, 11 ἡ ψυχὴ ποτὲ μὲν ἄμπελος, ποτὲ δὲ πρόβατον, ποτὲ νύμφη ... λέγεται). The words of the eucharistic prayer over the cup in D 9:2 cannot be explained w. certainty εὐχαριστοῦμέν σοι ... ὑπὲρ τῆς ἁγίας ἀ. Δαυὶδ τοῦ παιδός σου, ἧς ἐγνώρισας ἡμῖν διὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ παιδός σου (s. It is perhaps noteworthy that the blessing of the cup precedes the blessing of the bread.  That is not the case in Matt and Mark.  This reminds one of Luke’s institution narrative with cup, bread, cup.

3 κλάσμα, ατος, τό  In the GNT this word is only ever used of the fragments of bread picked up after a supernatural feeding.

4  ὥσπερ ἦν τοῦτο τὸ κλάσμα διεσκορπισμένον ἐπάνω τῶν ὀρέων καὶ συναχθὲν ἐγένετο ἕν  Does this refer to the harvesting of the wheat on the hills which being made into bread “became one” or instead to remaining fragments after a supernatural feeding which being picked up and put in baskets thereby “became one”?  (The feeding of John 6 is explicitly placed on a mountain.)  If the latter, then this group perhaps thought of the Eucharist as a sacramental/mystical participation in one of the miraculous feedings in the gospels, perhaps with implications of that picked up bread which was put in 12 baskets being somehow mystically or sacramentally the very bread we share in the Eucharist.  (Or maybe this is fanciful over-interpretation.)

1. Μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐμπλησθῆσαι Does the fullness implicit in this verb suggest the Eucharist was part of a broader full agape meal?


Notice BAGD’s reference to John 6 in relation to Didache X.


2 to provide a sufficient amount, satisfy (Diod. S. 5, 39, 4 ἀπὸ λαχάνων ἐμπίμπλανται; oft. LXX; Jos., Ant. 4, 234 al.) τινά τινος someone w. someth. Ac 14:17 (s. 1); ἐ. τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν satisfy oneself Hs 5, 3, 7. Abs. (Dio Chrys. 57 [74], 11; Appian, Bell. Civ. 2, 64 §268) ὡς ἐνεπλήσθησαν when they had eaten their fill J 6:12. μετὰ τὸ ἐμπλησθῆναι D 10:1. οἱ ἐμπεπλησμένοι those who have plenty to eat Lk 6:25. Cp. B 3:5 v.l. (Funk; Is 58:10).


5 καὶ σύναξον αὐτὴν ἀπὸ τῶν τεσσάρων ἀνέμων, τὴν ἁγιασθεῖσαν, εἰς τὴν σὴν βασιλείαν  This is the second time that the “gathered bread” (καὶ συναχθὲν ἐγένετο ἕν) is an eschatological image of the future gathered people of God.”


7 It looks to me like church leaders without prophetical gifts were to use the above prescribed liturgical language when leading in the Eucharist whereas Prophets had no such limitation.  They could use or not use such liturgical language to the extent they wished — ὅσα θέλουσιν.

σιτία, ας, ἡ (Christian wr.; Hesychius.–σιτεία=feeding, fattening is found as early as PCairZen 534, 1 [III B.C.]. Is this a different word, from σιτεύω=feed, fatten, or just another spelling?) a batch of dough, dough (so Apophtheg. Patrum [c. VI A.D.]: MPG LXV 192a; 196b) σ. ποιεῖν make bread, bake bread D 13:5.–DELG s.v. σῖτος.

1 It is interesting to see this gathering of Christian worship called a θυσία.

1 The congregation seems to be doing the ordaining (appointing).  And the reference to ἐπισκόπους καὶ διακόνους almost precludes the possibility that “bishops” are a third office at this point.  That term is strictly synonymous with “presbuteros” at this point, at least in this document.

2 A life shown to be imperfect at the final time (eschatological?) is proof of a worthless faith.  Does the NT teach this?


4 κοσμοπλανής, ῆτος, ὁ (s. κόσμος, πλανάω) deceiver of the world, of an apocalyptic apotheosis of evil D 16:4 (Harnack and Knopf read κοσμοπλάνος).


5 σωθήσονται ὑπ’ αὐτου τοῦ καταθέματος


κατάθεμα, ατος, τό (s. next entry; IDefixAudollent 22, 23; AcPh 28 [Aa II/2, 15, 12]) that which is devoted or given over to a deity, i.e. under a curse (חֵרֶם), hence accursed thing (s. ἀνάθεμα 2) Rv 22:3 (Erasmian rdg.: κατανάθεμα). The passage D 16:5 is (perh. purposely) obscure: σωθήσονται ὑπ̓ αὐτοῦ τοῦ κ. they will be saved by the accursed one himself (i.e. by Christ who, in the minds of those offended by him, is accursed; cp. also Gal 3:13 κατάρα; Wengst, Didache p. 99 n. 138).–DELG s.v. τίθημι. ἐκπέτασις, εως, ἡ (s. prec. entry; Plut., Mor. 564b) spreading out, opening σημεῖον ἐκπετάσεως ἐν οὐρανῷ a sign, (consisting of) an opening in the heavens D 16:6 (EStommel, Röm. Quartalschrift 48, ’53, 21-42; Wengst, Didache p. 99f, n. 139: celestial sign of the cross).–DELG s.v. πετάννυμι.
